How are neurons damaged in multiple sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis means lesions harm the meylin sheath surrounding the axon part of neurons. The myelin sheath is like an insulator, allowing for electric impulses to be properly transmitted from one neuron to the next. These lesions affect the myelin sheath, and therefore may interrupt the signals one neuron is trying to send to another. This could make something as simple as moving your finger, or scratching your arm very difficult because of misinterpreting signals.
